littleCity [pre release]

little city is a small sandbox project i'm working on. feel free to give it a go and take screenshots to show off your ideas [tag me on my Twitter]!

it's very early development and as such may feel very incomplete. i'll try to update regularly with new builds if you want to follow along.

UPDATE: added intersections and water due to popular demand! check controls below. water is experimental.

controls:

b = cycle buildings

e = cycle environment objects [trees, water]

r = cycle road

i = cycle intersections

left mb = place object [can hold down]

right mb = cancel/delete object [can hold down]

q [hold] = query value, mouse over buildings

ctrl + r = restart

ctrl + d = toggle debug text

let me know what you'd like to see added to the game. remember, this isn't supposed to be a SimCity type thing, simply sandbox city builder! querying value is for educational purposes; cancel current build before you can query.

notes: needs a mouse and keyboard. download the .exe version for a more stable experience. f = toggle fullscreen [may only work in windows]. running resolution: 1280 x 720.

thanks for playing!

Feedback:
ideas:
- show grid
- taskbar
-placing two buildings next to each other, merges them into a different building, adding Parking spaces or a crane moving, forklifts woozling around.
- at night different windows show light, you know, to give the city some life without simulating life.
-a road between two ponds morphs into a bridge
- a pond with each side connected to a tree tile becomes a park with little dots roaming around, to act as people with too much free time.

ur ied game could have a few updates like having a minesweeper tool or a bomb defual type thing we gotta do so we can reach the camp :3

I guess this doesn't work anymore?

Hi. I love your pixel art. Do you have any tutorials or something?

Nice game!!! Planning to continue playing it. Enjoyed it very much... It was kinda hard to organize my streets, there were some intersections that I couldn't organize very well. Maybe there are some pieces missing. Keep the great job!

Thank you for playing! It was a very early prototype, so I do apologise if it not the most intuitive of interfaces. There were definitely things I wish I had added/improved at the time!

A cool game.I recommend to add beach, ocean, humans, color change, skins(ancient, futuristic, etc.)

Hey, I would love to change the key bindings, But I love this game!

I would love to see road intersections, and to be able to change the grid or to build freely.

Anyway, very cute game :)

Cool thing. Pretty cute. Nice artsryle. Definately like it

i actually really enjoy this game! :) keep going!

I'd suggest to add bridges so that a road can cross water.

Also, it would be nice to see civilians or vehicles (cars, trucks, etc.) on the roads.

And I think a harbor or boat-docks would be a nice addition; with that boats would be nice too.

this is cool :)

I mean a restraunt. Sorry for my mistyping.

Add a resrtaunt, please.

The most impactful simple feature, would be, I believe, water.

Also, when making this comment, my city was destroyed as the page took me to the comments. :'(
Haha.

It's a nice beggining. Perhaps in the future you can add new color for buildings and some different types of trees, dirt roads, lakes or so, sand etc. That way people can basically reproduce whatever they want to. If this is about a graphic thing, to build cities and things like that, I believe adding the before mentioned features would improve the xp.  I love it's simpliCity though, keep up the good job :D

Thank you for the feedback. Water is next on the to-do-list, and I'll take the other ideas into consideration!

Nice job :) The controls are a little bit of a hassle though but I like it

Thank you! Yeah, sorry about the controls - theyre a work-in-progress. I will have some UI elements to help cycle through buildables soon, and may group keyboard shortcuts for easier management.

I love this! This is the start of the city builder I've been waiting for! Here are a few things I would love to see added/changed:

Intersections like Jiri_one mentioned, as well as bridges and overpasses.

Water and rivers like Ms .45 said.

I think it would awesome if you could adjust the hight of land so you could make hills and cliffs.

It would be cool if when there were two roads going the same direction side-by-side you could choose to merge them to create a "highway"

I would like it if the grid "snapped" a bit more. I find that when I want to place a building or road in between multiple other constructions i have to be very specific as to where my cursor is. This would make it easier to use your game.

Another thing that would be nice is if the button for buildings was closer to the other two current buttons  for objects. That way you wouldn't have to move your hand so much.

I am just starting to learn to code so I don't know how much of this stuff is possible but I hope it's helpful. I can't wait for the next updates!

P.S. I LOVE your artwork on twitter and especially your pixel art style. This is the first game of yours I've played and I'm looking forward to playing your other games as well!

Thank you very much for playing and offering some great thoughts on the game!

Feature-wise, more roads are on their way! They'll never get super complex but intersections will definitely be included. Water is also planned at some stage.

The grid snapping is already working as envisioned, but the leniency of where it will  actively allow the player to click can be adjusted super easily (set it up to do so), so maybe in the next build I'll adjust this. Hopefully that helps the usability issue you speak of! I'll also give some thought to the keyboard shortcut grouping when I implement the planned UI.

Again, this sort of feedback is extremely valuable so I really do appreciate it (from everyone). Thank you also for the kind words - it's hugely motivating hearing that my work can bring joy to others :)

really good game i enyoid it

Very nice!

(I think making some more roads like a T shaped one or an + shaped one would improve thegame.)

Thank you for the feedback! More roads is definitely my most common request and will be added more variety soon!

beautiful :)

You're probably already doing this, but I'm looking forward to a greater variety of trees, maybe some features like bridges and water. But I really enjoyed playing with it even with just the simple trees and buildings!

Thank you for playing! I'm definitely going to be adding more variety, so I'll make a note to do a few more trees!

Things will also be a little more lively and interactive eventually.
